Built To Impress – Our Candid Review Of The Jura Impressa C9 Coffee Machine

by | Jul 28, 2019

We’ve all heard that saying, right, that there are machines now that can do just about everything but make the tea? Well, the Jura Impressa C9 Automatic can even do that – although it’s primarily a coffee machine, or a coffee and espresso center, to be precise. This strong and sturdy machine also dispenses cappuccinos, lattes, milk, oh, yes, and coffee.

Jura C9 Review

The C9 automatic is a truly handsome-looking machine, mainly sleek polished black – or “piano black”, if you prefer, with chrome accents. While, as a modern machine, you’ll find a fair amount of plastic, the grinder itself is ceramic with a plastic lid.

While it carries a pretty hefty price tag, you are getting a LOT of machine for your hard-earned dollars with the Jura C9. It’s surprisingly compact, standing just 13.5 inches high, by 11 inches by 16 inches. It has a 64-ounce removable water tank, an 18 bar pump, and so many different settings you might be a little bedazzled at first.

Jura IMPRESSA C9 Automatic Coffee Machine, Black
  • 1450-watt automatic coffee-and-espresso center with 14-ounce thermal milk container
  • Preprogrammed beverage buttons for coffee, espresso, cappuccino, milk, or hot water

  • 18-bar power pump; ThermoBlock heating system; water filter, scoop, DVD, and more included
  • Measures 16 by 11 by 13-1/2 inches; 2-year limited warranty

This is a serious machine, for serious coffee fiends, in smaller households who drink a lot of coffee, or medium-sized or larger households who drink moderate amounts of Joe.

Why We Love This Machine

The majority of Jura machines are manufactured in Switzerland, with some models made in Portugal. The Jura Impressa Coffee Maker has the sturdy, no-nonsense look of a machine that’s been designed by the Swiss.

Since this is the country that also does cheese, cuckoo clocks, watches, pharmaceuticals and banking extremely well, all of which require precision and craft, it shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise that Jura coffee machines are extremely well put together.

The Nitty Gritty – Features Of The Jura Impressa C9

The Impressa C9 coffee maker is a heck of a lot of machine – and a serious contender when you’re in the market for a robust and versatile coffee machine.

We mentioned earlier that, while this machine is marketed as a coffee maker, you can also use it just for hot water for tea if you prefer. You can also whip up a pretty decent cup of milky hot chocolate in a trice, too. Add a few marshmallows and a sprinkling of chocolate powder, and it’s a serious rival to those super-foamy coffee shop hot chocolate beverages that are a real treat.

The Technical Bits

There are two temperature settings and three strength levels. The water tank, removable for easy filling and cleaning, holds 64 ounces; the bean container holds up to 8 ounces. The machine weighs around 21 pounds or just over 26 with the packaging materials.

You can choose to brew 1 cup or 2 at a time, in any size, just about, from 1oz to 16oz; and there’s a nifty rotary dial that lets you make changes even while you’re still brewing. The dial also allows you to change the strength of your drink while your coffee is being ground, and the volume of your drink while the machine is actually brewing. If you’re not sure where to find the dial, look behind the little door.

The conical burr grinder has 6 fineness settings, from light to dark roast; if you’re using pre-ground coffee there’s a dedicated funnel. The C9 automatic coffee maker can grind and tamp beans, brew coffee or espresso under high pressure in less than a minute – it’s incredibly quick. Given the complexity of all of that going on, the Jura Impressa C9 is surprisingly quiet in its operation.

Jura Impressa C9

Jura IMPRESSA C9 Automatic Coffee Machine, Black
  • 1450-watt automatic coffee-and-espresso center with 14-ounce thermal milk container
  • Preprogrammed beverage buttons for coffee, espresso, cappuccino, milk, or hot water
  • 6-setting conical burr grinder; pre-ground coffee funnel; 64-ounce removable water tank
  • 18-bar power pump; ThermoBlock heating system; water filter, scoop, DVD, and more included
  • Measures 16 by 11 by 13-1/2 inches; 2-year limited warranty

The two-step pre-infusion cycle means your ground coffee is moistened and conditioned, so you get the absolute maximum flavor. And if you’re using it for those divine espressos, your crema will be pretty much perfect every time – which espresso lovers know is absolutely key.

And we haven’t even mentioned the milk yet. The Jura Impressa C9 happily steams and froths milk. The thermal stainless steel milk flask will keep milk cold for up to 8 hours.

What’s In The Box?

It typically ships with a scoop, water filter, milk cup, cleaning tablets, water hardness testing strip, and even a DVD. It comes with a limited warranty – 2 years or 6,000 cups, whichever comes first. That’s an average of around 8 cups a day, every day.

When it comes to power conservation, you can either opt for continuous-on or auto-off, from 30 minutes to 9 hours, in increments of 1 hour. The electronic water level sensor means you can be reassured that this machine will never operate without water. The cleaning cycle runs after about 200 cups, and this is a cleaning cycle that can take a little while, so you do need to be prepared for that.

The LED display takes a little getting used to, but it’s bright and clear and doesn’t mess around; the information it displays is clear and unambiguous. You’ll see instructions like “clean unit”, “fill water”, “heating” and the all-important “ready”. It will also tell you when you need to empty the used coffee container with the no-nonsense “full”. You also get 7 different language options.

Something In The Water?

The Clearyl water system is gloriously advanced. Not only does it remove aluminum, chlorine, copper and lead to improving the taste of your coffee, there’s also a special organic additive which can remove just about all calcium.

There’s even a water selector to cope with 5 levels of water hardness – and one of the aspects you’re pretty much sure to love is that this machine has such powerful filters available that they can take most of the calcium out of the water, so descaling is something you’ll need to do only very rarely.

Is The Impressa Coffee Maker An Improvement?

The previous model, the Impressa F7, was almost identical – the C9 has lost the illuminated area for cups that the F7 had. We also thought the spouts on the C9 aren’t quite as well-made and robust as they were on the F7.

Pros & Cons

What we really like

Very well-designed and put together

Swiss levels of precision

Advanced “Clearyl” water system

What we don't like

✗ Doesn’t cope very well with oily beans

✗ The milk froth can come out a little heavy and the frother is a little difficult to clean

✗ You can’t change your coffee choice once it’s in the hopper

C9 Review Lowdown

Generally, Jura is regarded as a very solid and well-made brand. While a few customers out there have had one or two issues with this model, numbers are small. When you look at the C9 reviews out there on the web, including those for the Jura coffee machine on Amazon, overall there are around three times as many happy Jura C9 Autimatic owners as dissatisfied ones.

This machine is designed mainly for domestic use, in medium to larger size households, but it would also be perfect in a smallish workplace, or the reception area of somewhere like a beauty or hairdressing salon, recruitment agency or a garage or car showroom where it’s customary to offer clients a cup of coffee while they wait. It would even be a pretty good addition to a small café, where coffees were one of the beverages offered.

If you’re using oilier beans or flavored beans the Jura doesn’t really like them too well – they’ll sometimes get stuck in the hopper and might need a bit of a nudge; you might even be better off just not using them at all. Dark roasts also don’t seem to work quite as well as medium to light, although we may just need to look at how finely we’re grinding them.

Once you’ve added your beans to the hopper, you can’t remove them; once you’ve added your beans, you’re committed to drinking that blend until they’re all used up. So you can’t switch blends easily; you literally have to “drink to the bitter end”.

While you do get a choice of temperatures, we found the drinks the Jura brewed didn’t stay hot quite as long as we might have expected, even in an insulated travel mug. (We tried a thermos flask as well, for good measure).

The frother is also a little bit finicky to wash properly, and we actually thought a steam wand might work better. We found our froth came out a little bit on the heavy side rather than really frothy – more like milk with bubbles, really, though that could of course just be my technique and I may need to watch the DVD again.

If the froth is important to you, then look to DeLonghi. The ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine comes in slightly cheaper than the C9. DeLonghi machines also score well when it comes to cleaning time – it’s relatively short compared to many other brands.

What’s The Verdict? To Buy Or Not To Buy?

Despite the little niggles, if you have the budget, this solid machine will serve you well, especially if you’re a fan of espressos, lattes, milky hot chocolates and other specialty drinks. If all you want, however, is an ordinary coffee machine – if there is such a thing – then this might be a little over the top.

Overall, if we had to pick one word to describe this machine, it would be “reassuring”. The Jura Impressa C9 has a lot of solid personality in its sturdy little frame and would make a great coffee companion.
