Keurig K250 Coffee Maker Review – Good Things Come In Small Packages

by | May 3, 2019

Since space is always at a premium in our kitchen, mainly due to our love of kitchen technology, acquiring a new gadget is a serious decision. And when it comes to coffee machines, it’s almost a life-or-death situation. Not only does the machine have to have as small a physical footprint as possible, it also has to go with the décor, and, of course, it has to brew great coffee. The Keurig K250 scores well in all of these areas.

Keurig K250 Review

The Keurig 2.0 K250 comes with a starter pack of 4 coffee K-pods, two water filters and a water filter handle, as well as a bottle of descaling solution to help prolong the life of your machine. Many of the 2.0 series machines have now been discontinued, but the Keurig 2.0 K250 has been retained.

This is an ideal small domestic machine, particularly suited to solo households and small families. It might also suit small offices. It wouldn’t be ideal if you needed to brew large volumes of coffee although you can purchase the additional accessory of the K-carafe which has a capacity of 30 fluid ounces.

  • What's in the box: 4 k cup pods, a water filter handle + 2 water filters, and a bottle of descaling solution to help extend the life of your brewer
  • 40 ounce water reservoir: Allows you to brew 4+ cups before having to refill, saving you time and simplifying your morning routine; The water reservoir is removable, making it easy to refill
  • Multiple k cup pod brew sizes: (4, 6, 8, 10 ounce) and brews a carafe (22, 26, or 30 ounce) using k carafe pods to give you more coffee when you need it (carafe sold separately)
  • Strength control: a strength control setting allows you to brew a bolder cup using any k cup pod brew size.
  • Black & white touch screen: makes it easy to brew a fresh, great tasting cup in under a minute.

One of the best aspects of this machine is its small size. It’s 13.7 inches high (you need to make sure you have an additional 2 inches of clearance above the machine so you can lift the lid to insert the K-cups), with a base that’s 9 inches by 15 inches. It weighs 7.5 lbs.

The removable water reservoir holds approximately 40 fluid ounces, giving you on average 3 large cups of coffee before you need to refill it. The manufacturers suggest using filtered or bottled water for the best results, although filters are included. There is also a high altitude setting.

Keurig® 2.0 K250 – What’s In The Box?

The machine comes with a starter pack of 4 pods to get you going, but one of the joys of this machine is the sheer variety of drinks you can buy for it. Since I’m a sucker for anything that tastes vaguely of caramel, salted caramel and butter toffee are rapidly becoming two of my favourites, though I also like the French vanilla blend you can get for an everyday start to the day.

The English and Irish breakfast teas are also pretty good. If I’m trying to be a little healthier, there are also a great green tea, half-caff and decaffeinated coffee options available. There are some good cocoa and hot chocolate choices available for that “just off to bed” beverage, too.

What’s Great About The Keurig K250

One of the most charming aspects of this machine is the range of different colors. As well as black and white, you can choose from plum gray, which is more gray than purple; turquoise; peacock blue, which is more blue than teal; sandy pearl, which is closer to beige; imperial red; and oasis.

There is a very good range of coffees, in terms of both flavors and strengths, available for this machine, although choices are limited: you can choose the size and strength of your drink, but the temperatures are preset by the machine. The black and white display is unfussy and easy to use.

The Keurig K250 Plus has an adjustable drip tray, meaning you can use cups up to 7 inches in height, including travel mugs.

You aren’t limited to only making coffee; you can also make tea and hot chocolate, and there is an option to dispense hot water, although to get that mode to work you need to open and close the lid without a cartridge inserted.

An Acquired Taste – What Takes A Little Getting Used To With The Keurig K250

One of the less flexible characteristics of this coffee maker is that you can’t adjust the temperature; this is set for you by the machine. If you are using K-Cup® pods the factory setting is 89 degrees Celsius, or 192 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are using a K-Carafe™ pod your drink will be brewed at 92 degrees Celsius, or 197 degrees Fahrenheit.

This machine does not have an “auto off” feature; you can use the electronic display to put the coffee maker into energy saving mode, but to turn it off completely you need to turn it off at the electrical plug socket. You have a choice of English, French or Spanish for the display.

A K-cup For Everyone

One of the features of this maker which you will either find an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on your point of view, is that it only really works effectively with Keurig’s own K-cups. The advantages are: there are over 350 flavors available, from the company’s own Green Mountain blends to high street names like Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Folga, Krispy Kreme, Peet, Twinings, Lipton and many others; and it is extremely easy to cater for different tastes within the family. If you’re an espresso fiend, though, this probably isn’t the right machine for you.

Environmental Features Of The Keurig® K250 Coffee Maker

One of the main disadvantages is the effect on the environment. It isn’t always easy to recycle the pods, although Keurig have taken this on board and it is now possible to use the recently released recyclable K-cups. This gives you considerably more freedom over choosing your own blend of coffee or loose-leaf tea. The only approved accessory for this purpose is the My K-Cup Reusable Filter.

You do need to descale the machine every 3 to 6 months, depending on how hard or soft your water is; the recommendation is to use bottled or filtered water to prolong the life of the machine. An automated reminder will appear. The company has produced clear instruction videos on how to descale and care for your machine. You can either use the descaling solution available from the company or white vinegar. If you do decide to use the water filters, they need to be replaced every 2 months or 60 tank refills.

There are a few niggles with this machine: there is no auto-off feature, no programmable option, and the power cord is really quite short, at 36 inches.

Pros & Cons Of The Keurig K250 Plus

What I really like

Small physical footprint

Great choice of flavors available

Great range of pastel and vivid color ways

Can brew chocolate and tea as well as coffee

Reusable baskets available

Easy-to-use display

What I don't like

✗ You can’t change the temperature of the water

✗ No auto shut-off or programmable features

✗ Doesn’t make espresso

It seems that the Keurig® K250 Coffee Maker is a little like Marmite – people who own one either really love it or really don’t, although on balance more people love it than not. Owners respond especially favorably to the fresh taste of the drinks, the convenience and flexibility, the relative speed of the brewing process, the cute color options, and the small physical space required.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Coffee Maker

While I don’t object to spending money on my favourite beverage, or a suitable machine to brew it, I do like to make sure it’s going to meet the needs of myself and my nearest and dearest before I invest in a new model. The budget is a consideration, but so is whether I’m going to use it mainly for regular morning brews to get us all going in the morning, and the variety of drinks it can make, in terms of flavors and strengths.

And again, while I don’t object in the slightest to ensuring I look after the machine, to prolong its life and make the coffee taste better, I also don’t want to spend my entire life cleaning the components.

And then there’s the color. While I love black and chrome for their sheer classiness, there are times when it’s nice to bring a little fun to our collection of kitchen gadgets. With eight different color ways to choose from, the Keurig K250 scores especially well in this regard.

Other Options – If The Keurig 250 Isn’t For You

While it’s not the cheapest machine out there, the Keurig 250 isn’t the most expensive on the market either. Depending on what you’re looking for, Keurig offers a couple of good alternatives.

Keurig K200

The Keurig K200 is equally compact but does not come in the same range of colors as the Keurig 250. It’s especially suitable for one-person households; you can choose to brew a cup size of 4, 6, 8 or 10 fluid ounces.

Another option is The Keurig K55 and might be particularly suitable if you want the option for iced tea and coffee in the summer as well as hot brews. It also has a slightly larger reservoir than either the K200 or the 250, at 48 fluid ounces. It does, however, take a little longer to heat the water than either the 250 or the K200.

Keurig 2.0 K250 Conclusion And Rating

Keurig almost certainly has a machine that will suit you; the K250 is a great choice if you have limited space and a love of variety. With the newly introduced environmentally responsible accessories, it’s a viable option for a modern kitchen. Why not check the Keurig K250 out for yourself?
